Jesus said to His disciples in John 16:7 ‘It is best for you if I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate (Holy Spirit) won’t come. If I do go away I will send Him to you.’ Think about that statement for a moment. Jesus knew that once His mission of sacrifice and resurrection was completed a new mission would begin and we would need someone else to come alongside us.
So how and why does Holy Spirit come to us? What do we need Him for?
The first place to look is how the Holy Spirit worked in partnership with Jesus.
Isaiah 11:1-2 describes this;
‘Out of the stump of David’s family will grow a shoot—
yes, a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root.
And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—
the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and might,
the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.’
First, The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him. This is anointing.
Luke 4:18-19 Jesus said ‘The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because He has anointed me to preach good news..’
Second, The Spirit of Wisdom. John ch3 describes Jesus as having the Spirit without limit which explains how Jesus was able to teach and answer all sorts of people and the accusations made against Him with incredible wisdom.
Third, The Spirit of Understanding. Jesus being fully God and fully man meant that He understood the Father’s perfect purpose and ways and yet also totally understood human kind.
Fourth, The Spirit of Counsel. Isaiah called Jesus the ‘Wonderful Counsellor’. Jesus always knew the next step forward for people.
Fifth, The Spirit of Power. Read through the 4 Gospels to see exactly the power that Jesus had. He walked in the authority of it.
Sixth, The Spirit of Knowledge. Jesus completely knew the will of the Father. All that He said and did was being directed from the Father above. John 5:19.
Finally, The Spirit of the fear of the Lord. Jesus was not afraid of the Father. He was the only one who kept the Law perfectly and fulfilled it. Only He could say in the end, “It is finished.”
Pray this today:
Holy Spirit, as we read the bible, we see how you moved in partnership with Jesus during His time upon the earth. Jesus said that He would send you to us, ‘our Advocate!’
Just like you worked through and in Jesus we also recognise our need for you. Please come. Fill us to overflowing so that we too can walk in your power. Amen.
