Matt 12:31 – And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.
And there it is. The unpardonable sin! That verse terrified me as a young christian. After the glorious news that my sins would be forgiven if I came to Jesus, to then discover that there was something that would never be forgiven – it shook me to the core. I mean, what if I blasphemed against the Holy Spirit before I heard about the love of Jesus?? What if I did it by accident?!! That would be it right? Lost forever….
I don’t think it helped that whenever someone preached and used this verse, that they didn’t make it very clear what ‘blaspheming against the Holy Spirit’ really was.
So let me be clear. If you are worried about blaspheming against the Holy Spirit, then you won’t. If you love and follow Jesus, you won’t. The fact that you care about it is proof that you haven’t, and won’t.
If we see the work of the Spirit being to ‘testify of Jesus’ (John 15:26), then the full rejection of Jesus is essentially calling the Holy Spirit a liar – and that is ‘blaspheming the Holy Spirit’. Bear in mind that just before Jesus talked about the unpardonable sin, he had healed a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute and the religious leaders of the day were suggesting that the only way he could have done that was by the power of demons – intimating that Jesus himself was demon-possessed! Jesus then gives the warning about blaspheming against the Holy Spirit.
So, if you love Jesus – be encouraged! One bible commentator says “…no man who believes the Divine mission of Jesus Christ, ever can commit this sin.”
Jesus I thank you that I can say that you are Lord BECAUSE of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 12:3). Thank you for all the ways things worked together to bring me to You. Help me not to treat your words or your works lightly, but also to live in the freedom that you bring. Amen
